Your 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Morning

Pickup & Drive South to Matmata

Hotel pickup at 07:30 AM from Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse. Travel south through Sfax and Gabès, watching the landscape evolve from olive groves to semi-desert plains. Stop for a comfort break and lunch on your own at a recommended roadside restaurant. Arrive Matmata mid-afternoon.

Day 1 — Late Afternoon

Check Into Your Troglodyte Hotel

Check into the troglodyte hotel of your choice — bedrooms carved into the rock, naturally cool, with traditional Berber decor. Accommodation is not included in this tour — your driver-guide will recommend trusted options at the time of booking (typical rate 60–110 € per room, dinner on request). Take time to wander the village, photograph the iconic crater-like pit dwellings, and enjoy a sunset mint tea on a panoramic terrace.

Day 2 — Morning

Sidi Driss Hotel — Luke Skywalker's Home

Walk to the legendary Sidi Driss Hotel — the original underground location used as Luke Skywalker's childhood farmhouse in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) and Attack of the Clones (2002). Many of the original Lars homestead props are still in place. A must for film fans. Continue to a working Berber pottery atelier where you can try wheel-throwing.

Day 2 — Afternoon

Berber Family Lunch & Ksour Tour

Share a home-cooked lunch with a Berber family in a private troglodyte home — couscous boulettes, fresh harissa, mint tea, and stories of life underground. After lunch, drive the panoramic ridge road south to Tataouine, visiting the abandoned ksour (fortified granaries) of Chenini and Douiret — perched on rocky outcrops with sweeping views of the Sahara hinterland.

Day 2 — Evening

Second Night — Matmata or Douz

Return to your troglodyte hotel in Matmata for a second peaceful night underground, OR ask your driver-guide to suggest a Saharan tented camp near Douz with optional sunset camel ride. Accommodation booked and paid separately — your driver-guide handles introductions and dinner reservations.

Day 3 — Morning

4×4 Dahar Mountains Experience (optional)

Optional full-day 4×4 experience (200 €/group, add at booking) through the Dahar mountain ridges — visit Tamezret Berber village, climb to the panoramic Toujane viewpoint, and explore abandoned cave villages with an experienced off-road driver. Without the 4×4 add-on, this morning becomes a relaxed exploration of Matmata village before the return drive. Lunch on your own in a mountain restaurant overlooking the plains.

Day 3 — Afternoon

Return Journey

Comfortable return to your hotel in Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse via the A1 motorway. Arrival between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM depending on your starting city. Drop-off at your hotel door.
